Feedback to Dr. David Meyer

Good day Dr. Meyer,

On 29.08.2014, you kindly answered my question 'stomach intestinal - disorder of the digestion of animal proteins' in great detail.

I just wanted to quickly inform you that I have found the cause of my symptoms, including leaky gut, through an elimination therapy: wheat.

Since I completely eliminated wheat from my diet (including hidden wheat, for example in sausages), all symptoms have slowly disappeared.

The fact that wheat can have very serious effects on health seems to be quite well known in America:

The book "Wheat Belly" (German "Die Weizenwampe") by cardiologist Dr. Davis, which deals precisely with this topic, was a New York Times #1 bestseller and cites many statements with references to corresponding studies.

Why only a few holistic doctors and naturopaths in the German-speaking area deal with this issue is a mystery to me.

For my part, I am trying to at least raise awareness of the issue among those with whom I come into contact.

Best regards

Dr. David Meyer

Dear inquirer,

I am glad that you have found a way to improve your health. Indeed, gluten intolerance is more common than we previously thought in medicine. Many people who do not receive a diagnosis through laboratory tests still feel an improvement in digestion and energy levels when they eliminate wheat protein.

There are certainly many expensive tests offered by nutritional medicine specialists, gastroenterologists, and allergists. If you have the means, you can get tested for other intolerances. But often, the test results do not correlate with the patient's subjective experience.

So, I can only advise you to listen to your body, try different baked goods without wheat - maybe try spelt. Remember that non-wheat fibers in the gut may also sometimes cause discomfort and keep the gut active. This is normal and healthy. By following a low-fat and animal protein-free diet, you actively reduce your (intestinal) cancer risk.

I wish you all the best!
