Mucus in the stool

Hello,

to describe my problem, I have to go back a bit in the past, without being able to know if all this is related or could be related.

I have always had a rather sensitive and sometimes moody digestive system. About 1 ½ years ago, I suddenly and without warning had green stool. I went to the doctor and it was diagnosed with a slightly enlarged liver (fatty liver). The green stool remained a one-time experience. About ¾ of a year ago, diarrhea and cramps started to occur more frequently. As a result, I underwent a bowel cleansing because I suspected that my gut flora was disturbed due to taking antibiotics. The diarrhea stopped after the bowel cleansing, or occurred very rarely, only when I ate something with cream sauce. Obviously, there is an intolerance to cream. Otherwise, the stool consistency is largely normal. However, I have noticed that there are mucus inclusions in the stool. These are quite light. I would describe it as ochre. The mucus inclusion is more noticeable in smaller fecal amounts. Occasionally, very rarely and only with very hard stool, there is some light red blood. Bowel movements are often very large and then nothing for days. Therefore, I feel a sensation of fullness. I cannot describe it better. The color of the stool is normal, not dark or black. I have quite a lot of gas. Occasionally, I have a very slight pulling sensation in the right abdominal area. It is not painful. It might be compared to a slight stitch, only deeper. I am 41, male, 1.84m tall and weigh about 86kg. My weight has remained stable for years. My diet is admittedly somewhat unhealthy. I eat too little vegetables or salad, but I have very little alcohol consumption. There is no relevant family history of illness. I am now seriously worried. Are these concerns justified? What could I be suffering from?

Dr. med. Kathrin Hamann

Hello,

In your case, I recommend an examination by a gastroenterologist. You don't need to worry, but a chronic inflammatory bowel disease should be investigated. As you describe it, it could well be ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease. Especially the description of mucus and bits of mucous membrane, as well as occasional blood. This should be further clarified through a colonoscopy. Only with the findings available can a targeted treatment be initiated.

I wish you a speedy recovery, and if you have any further questions, I will gladly answer them.

Kind regards,

Dr. K. Hamann
