Under-eye bags after Botox treatment.

Dear Sir or Madam,

my question:

After a Botox treatment against crow's feet in August 2011, severe bags under my eyes have formed.

Can I expect these to diminish once the Botox is completely metabolized? Or is this already the case after 8 months?
Should I anticipate the bags under my eyes to remain permanently?

What treatment or relief options do you recommend for me? My doctor suggests surgical removal, which I would prefer to avoid if possible.

Thank you for your response.

Dear inquirer,

Unfortunately, you did not mention your age or gender, nor did you provide an image of the findings. Such a complication is possible when injecting Botox very close to the eye and the dose turns out to be too high. As with any Botox therapy, a personalized dose for the patient must be found, especially when injecting near the eyes.

However, after 8 months, I would expect the Botox effect to have worn off, and the under-eye bags may have another cause. Lymphatic massage, sleeping with an elevated head, and minimizing evening drinking are home remedies for the side effect of eye swelling after Botox.

I would recommend discussing the next steps with your doctor and possibly seeking the opinion of a second plastic surgeon. Perhaps a massage therapist can show you some tricks for lymphatic drainage that you can perform yourself.

If the under-eye bags are significantly bothersome, surgery could be an alternative to treating your wrinkles compared to Botox therapy, although it would depend heavily on the findings and, especially, your age.

Best wishes,
C. Welsch
