Ask a doctor on the topic of Internal medicine

What are paraseptal emphysematous bullae?

After a lung CT scan, the radiologist noted the following on the slip: "Small paraseptal emphysematous blebs accentuated in the apical lower lobe left subpleural".
Is that not good, right? Could this be the beginning of COPD?
Or could it be an acute small pneumonia?
Will it go away?

Dr. med. Frauke Gehring

Hello,

Emphysema bubbles are actually overinflated lung bubbles found next to the walls (septa) of the lung lobes in your case. Yes, this is not good and a sign of COPD, which should be confirmed through lung function tests.

Pneumonia shows completely different images in a CT scan and cannot be confused with emphysema. If you smoke, you should definitely quit now. While the emphysema may not reverse, it will also not get worse and therefore not impact your life expectancy.

I wish you all the best!

Sincerely, Dr. Gehring
