Therapy to stop the growing giant liver hemangioma and make it smaller.

I have a giant hemangioma on the liver (11.18 * 9.87 + 7 cm) in the right lobe of the liver, which displaces the liver vessels and also presses slightly on the vena cava. The hemangioma was discovered incidentally about 12 years ago, at that time it was 7 * 7.4 * 8 cm. Since then, it has been regularly monitored. It is thrombosed in the center and continues to grow around the outside. Is there a therapy (other than surgery) to stop the growth and reduce the size of the tumor?

Dr. med. Frauke Gehring

Good morning,

Unfortunately, there is no therapy to stop the growth. It is not possible to sclerose such a hemangioma, as it consists of many, including large vessels, and of course there is no medication that would only work in the hemangioma.

Therefore, the only option left is surgical intervention, which should also be performed if the hemangioma is already compressing the inferior vena cava.

I wish you all the best!

Sincerely, Dr. Gehring
