Abortion with Xarelto

Hello,

I have been taking Xarelto for 3 months (due to a DVT) and I am now unintentionally pregnant (already in the 8th week), but I only found out a few days ago. I definitely do not want to keep the child, as the effects of Xarelto on pregnancy are not yet known. Additionally, I live abroad (in Africa) where healthcare is not very good. My question is: can I have an abortion while continuing to take Xarelto? What are the risks of bleeding?

Good morning,

If you are currently taking Xarelto, you should not undergo an abortion, as there is a high risk of life-threatening bleeding.

However, you only need to pause it briefly; two days before the procedure are enough to ensure sufficient clotting. Three days after the procedure, you can start taking it again.
