Removal of the spleen due to low platelets.

Due to defective vein valves, a vein in my right leg needs to be completely removed. However, my platelet count is only 50,000 and the surgery cannot be performed. My primary care physician still strongly advises me to undergo this surgery and recommends the removal of my spleen, as the defective vein could lead to larger problems (such as open wounds) later in life. I am 58 years old and otherwise in excellent health. In general, I have no issues with this recommendation. Thank you for your response and best regards.
Dear Questioner,
If I understand you correctly, you are seeking advice regarding the splenectomy suggested by your family doctor.
Generally, your family doctor, as your treating physician, knows you and your medical history best. However, I strongly recommend seeking a second opinion in this matter.
While the surgical removal of the spleen is not generally a serious procedure and often not associated with significant side effects, it is important to explore all non-invasive therapy options for your thrombocytopenia (low platelet count) before considering organ removal.
For example, during the recommended vein surgery, there may be alternative anticoagulant medications to Heparin. In a hospital setting, acute changes in platelet levels can be managed accordingly, such as through platelet concentrate infusion.
Since I am not aware of the cause of your thrombocytopenia or previous treatment attempts, I can only advise you to seek a second opinion before consenting to the operation, based on a new examination/history. A purely online consultation cannot replace a visit to another doctor.
If a splenectomy becomes necessary, I can reassure you that this procedure, when performed by experienced colleagues, carries minimal risk of long-term complications and with proper aftercare and monitoring, should not significantly impact your quality of life.
I hope this information has been helpful. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me at any time.
Wishing you good health.
Best regards,
