The translation of "Hämatom" in English is "hematoma".
Dear Doctor,
Six weeks ago, my wife (76) suffered a larger hematoma (10x10 cm) below the left knee with corresponding swelling of the entire leg due to a bicycle accident. Although the doctor who examined the injury only recommended elevating the leg until the swelling went down on its own, he deemed therapy to accelerate the healing process unnecessary. From the beginning, she systematically treated the swelling with Essitol compresses, which only provided cooling to the affected leg but did not have a significant impact.
She then decided to see a sports medicine specialist, who immediately began bandaging the entire leg. After about 10 days, this led to some reduction in swelling, and he recommended that she continue treatment by wearing compression stockings that were originally prescribed for vein problems. Additionally, my wife also uses Heparin gel to treat the swelling and has been taking Bromelain tablets for a few days, which seems to be reducing the swelling, although there is still noticeable hardening in some areas. This does not significantly affect the mobility of the knee joint, aside from existing arthrosis damage.
Unfortunately, there is still a tendency for swelling in the left foot, especially when a pressure bandage is applied to the knee area at night to address swelling from the accident.
Therefore, my question is: What measures (aside from surgical intervention) could be taken to eliminate the effects of the hematoma as completely as possible, such as through physiotherapy? Also, what is your opinion on the effectiveness of Exhirud, which is no longer available in local pharmacies but is still sold online?
Best regards,
