Intensification of symptoms - muted hearing and tinnitus - despite corticosteroid therapy and stress reduction.

Hello,
in December, I occasionally experienced muted hearing in my right ear, often accompanied by or parallel to tinnitus. My ENT prescribed me Predni M Tablinen 16 mg (diagnosis: middle ear disorder, not sudden hearing loss, as I could still hear well despite feeling like my ear was stuffed with cotton). The likely cause is 2 months of chronic stress. I am supposed to take 4 tablets on days 1-3, 3 tablets on days 4 and 5, and 1 tablet on days 6 and 7. Today is the 3rd day of taking 4 tablets.

Since yesterday evening, the muted hearing (as usual, only in my right ear) has increased again, and the tinnitus has returned (although not as loud). Additionally, I feel like taking the medication is causing more stress rather than providing relief (this is just my personal layman's feeling). I forgot to mention during my appointment with the ENT that a saliva laboratory test result this summer indicated adrenal weakness. Now, despite 2 days of rest and recovery (which in the past had always significantly improved my symptoms), the muted hearing has become much more intense again, I wonder if adrenal weakness could be a disadvantage in the cortisone therapy prescribed by my ENT.

Since my ENT is not available over the weekend, I called the pharmacy this morning. The pharmacist advised me not to abruptly stop taking the cortisone. I would greatly appreciate a prompt response.

Best regards

Christian Welsch

Dear questioner, if no sudden hearing loss is detectable in the hearing test (did you have a hearing test?), I would recommend tapering off the cortisone. Without more specific data, I cannot imagine a diagnosis of adrenal insufficiency in the saliva test. Cortisone is produced in the adrenal cortex. As an alternative, you could consider taking gingium. Best regards, Welsch
