Dry, swollen nose

In my entire life, I have never had any significant nose problems.

However, about 3 months ago, I started experiencing longer episodes of nosebleeds from my right nostril approximately once a week. An ENT doctor examined my nose and performed a cauterization procedure, which went smoothly.

I was given a nasal spray/oil solution, mixed by the pharmacy, for treatment. After about 1 week, I had another nosebleed, but none since then.

From the beginning, the untreated nostril was particularly problematic: it felt swollen and was often blocked. The ENT doctor informed me that this was normal, as the nose was reacting to the cauterization and the dried blood.

Over the following weeks, the situation improved, but my nose felt somewhat like a foreign object. It seemed as though I had been hit in the nose, and it also felt very dry.

I returned to the ENT doctor, who prescribed the spray/oil solution again and advised me to be patient. Despite occasional improvements, the situation would worsen again, prompting me to seek a second opinion from another ENT doctor. They examined me and stated that my nose was temporarily hypersensitive, and it would take some time to settle down.

Treatment involved moisturizing sprays and an Emser nasal rinse, which reduced the dried blood formation significantly and has practically stopped by now.

However, every few days my nose swells again (now on both sides), especially around the nasal bridge. It feels like there is glue in my nose.

Subsequently, my primary care doctor prescribed a corticosteroid nasal spray, and recommended trying Voltaren tablets for swelling.

At times the situation improves significantly, allowing me to breathe normally, but then the swelling returns. Sometimes it gets really intense. My nose feels extremely dry, and this sensation extends down to my throat, mouth, and even towards my bronchial tubes.

I have tried drinking plenty of water, inhaling steam, rinsing my nose with tap water or Emser, and taking allergy tablets. Sometimes it goes well for a few days, then the swelling returns visibly. My doctor advised me to be patient, as several visits to ENT doctors have not yielded significant results.

Apart from being overweight, I do not have any other significant health issues. My blood pressure is well managed with medication, and my blood test results have been normal for years. I am not exposed to air conditioning or similar environmental factors. I only use nasal sprays very occasionally when absolutely necessary (approximately 1x per week/10 days).

Now, after a quarter of a year has passed, I am seeking help and confirmation that I need to continue waiting for my condition to improve.

Dear inquirer, what you are describing sounds unusual, but it may be that such complaints would be more expected after nasal surgery. You should arrange for the following, if not already done: 1. A CT scan of the paranasal sinuses 2. Allergy testing (if possible, skin prick and patch tests). Have you ever tried a nasal douche (with isotonic saline solution)? Regards, C. Welsch
