Occasional blood in the sputum

Good day, I have had slight traces of blood in my phlegm for a few days now (specifically since Monday morning), especially when I (please excuse the expression) cough up the mucus. Yesterday I visited the doctor and was sent for a lung X-ray, which showed that my lungs are completely fine, which is a relief. At the beginning of the year, my throat was also examined and nothing unusual was found, just a lot of mucus. I almost have the urge to produce mucus to see if there is blood in it or not (only a few times). Now my question is, what else could be causing this? Today I also have slight sore throat and a scratchy feeling in my throat. Could it be that constantly producing mucus is irritating the mucous membranes? Oh, I should also mention that I unfortunately smoke. I am very scared and would appreciate your response. Thank you very much.

Hello, I am happy to help you further.

What you are describing is called hemoptysis. This can occur due to irritation of the respiratory mucous membrane. Especially with smoking, chronic bronchitis often leads to this mild mucosal bleeding.

In any case, I would recommend a lung endoscopy here. X-rays alone are not sufficient. Even if nothing was found in the x-ray (which is good), I would advise seeing a lung specialist for further examination.

Clearing your throat additionally irritates your mucous membranes, so I would advise against it. A mucolytic agent and plenty of still water are recommended.

Do you have any questions about this? I am happy to help you further.

All the best and a speedy recovery!

Kind regards,
