Overdose of Acetyl-L-Carnitine

Hello.

Two days ago, I took Acetyl-L-Carnitine (not Carnitine!) as a dietary supplement. Unfortunately, I was not careful enough with the product information and exceeded the daily dose of 500 mg (according to the packaging), taking 1500 mg instead. So, a significant overdose.

About an hour after taking it, I started feeling nauseous.

About three hours later, I became very tired, weak, and unmotivated. Later on, I also felt a bit dizzy and had mild headaches. Additionally, I felt discomfort and a strange sensation that I can't describe. And the symptoms have hardly improved since the overdose, except for the nausea.

I can hardly imagine that a dietary supplement can cause such symptoms. But I have had these symptoms since the overdose, so there must be a connection.

What should/can I do?

Christian Welsch

Dear inquirer, you are describing symptoms of an L-carnitine overdose. From everything I have found on this, it is harmless. You should drink plenty of fluids, as the excess will be excreted through the kidneys. Regards, Welsch
