Heartburn stomach problems

Hello.

Since the beginning of December 2016, I (32 years old, male, 184 cm tall, 84 kg) have been experiencing problems with heartburn. I generally eat relatively healthy and exercise 3-4 times a week.

However, my problem is not the heartburn itself, but the fears that have developed from it. I have always struggled with anxiety when it comes to illnesses, including heartburn. It was a big mistake to search for information on the internet. When searching for heartburn and swallowing difficulties, you immediately find the worst things like esophageal cancer.

Regarding the swallowing difficulties: For about 2-3 years, I have had problems with my back at the level of the sternum and between the shoulders. While eating, I occasionally feel a slight pressure/burning sensation when swallowing. I am never sure if this is located in my back or in my stomach/esophagus.

In the context of my heartburn and what I read on the internet, I immediately projected my back problems onto the swallowing difficulties I read about online, and panic ensued.

I then went to see my family doctor who prescribed me Pantoprazole 40mg. After taking the first tablet, the symptoms disappeared from the day of intake to the next day. No more heartburn symptoms. The swallowing difficulties also improved/disappeared. I was able to enjoy steak, apples, and solid foods without any issues.

What should I do next? Am I overreacting to my "swallowing difficulties" and heartburn? Are my fears justified? I have scheduled an appointment with a gastroenterologist for the end of February. Is this a sensible step?

Dr. med. Frauke Gehring

Good day,

If the symptoms have disappeared after just one capsule, it was simply heartburn and does not require further endoscopic investigation. If your family doctor agrees, I would cancel the appointment. Especially since your back problems indicate tension in the thoracic spine area, which will naturally diminish with decreasing anxiety.

Esophageal cancer is also more common in older individuals.

Warm regards, Dr. Höllering
