When I move my head downwards (nodding), I experience pain that radiates into my left shoulder and upper arm. Additionally, the tip of my left index finger feels numb.
These symptoms occurred after exercising.
Good evening,
I am a neurosurgeon and I would be happy to help you.
The symptoms you described: radiating pain into the upper arm and sensory disturbances in the area of the index finger (dermatome C6/7) suggest irritation of a cervical nerve root in the cervical spine (e.g. due to a disc protrusion). As long as the muscle strength in the arm (flexion/extension at the elbow joint) is still fully and strong, you should undergo physiotherapeutic measures (heat, manual therapy, physical therapy). If the symptoms are not completely improved after 3 weeks or if there is an exacerbation or new symptoms, an MRI examination of the cervical spine is necessary.
Best regards and all the best.
