Ask a doctor on the topic of Ophthalmology

Am I starting to squint?

Hello,

I am 26 years old and have had an imbalance in both eyes for many years now. One eye is approximately -2.5, the other about +2. I have done a lot of research on this imbalance and have heard that it can even lead to eye squinting if the images on both eyes differ too much.

However, I have never had any problems with my vision, my brain has always been able to process it well, and I don't see double images. I must mention that my left eye does not have full vision, even with glasses, because I focus with my right eye and somehow my brain has "ignored" the left eye. I have no idea why.

My problem, however, is that I have noticed recently in photos that my eyes look strange. When I look sideways into the camera, I always feel like the outer eye is showing a little too far inward than it should. I have no idea if I am imagining this or if it has always been this way. That's why I wanted to ask an eye doctor here (as my eye doctor is not available for a few weeks): do you think I have a squint? Does it look weird?

Dr. med. Ralf Berg

Good day,

I would like to give you an initial assessment:
2x Yes, your eye position looks strange to me and I think you may be squinting or
that the outer eye is too far inward.

I cannot answer whether this has always been the case. Perhaps there are photos in your friends' or your own archives in this gaze situation that could provide some insight. Maybe your eye doctor has also made a note about it in their records.

It seems that the right eye may not always lead, at least in this lateral gaze situation.

I hope you can live with this finding until your eye doctor is back on site.
I do not see any urgent need for action or intervention based on the pictures over the internet.

Best regards, Dr. R. C. Berg
