Muscle twitches

Hello,
During my last blood test, a magnesium and calcium deficiency was detected.
I assume that this is caused by my unhealthy lifestyle (cola, beer, fast food...).
I have changed my diet and now only drink water.
I also take magnesium and calcium effervescent tablets.
However, I have noticed that since I started taking these effervescent tablets, I have been experiencing muscle twitching.
These should actually be symptoms of a magnesium deficiency, but I did not have them when the deficiency was untreated!
My question now is whether this is normal and what can be done about it.

Dr. med. Frauke Gehring

Good day,

It is quite possible that, depending on the dosage taken, you may have an overload of calcium, which can also trigger muscle twitches. Since you are now eating healthier, I would recommend stopping the calcium altogether and then checking the blood levels again.

I would also not recommend taking magnesium permanently to avoid kidney stones and diarrhea. However, the twitches are not caused by magnesium.

Warm regards, Dr. Höllering
