Ear noises

Hello,
I have been hearing my heartbeat in my ear at night for months (very uncomfortable for me) and a buzzing sound in my head, sometimes very loud and sometimes not. Could this be an early sign of a stroke? Otherwise, I have no other problems. About a year ago, I had my carotid artery checked. The doctor said I should eat low-fat and exercise. Besides occasional cycling and gardening, I don't do much. I am a 65-year-old female and unfortunately overweight. What could it be and what can I do? Thank you in advance for your message.

Dr. med Ralf von Seckendorff

Hello,

Atherosclerotic narrowing of the large neck blood vessels can be a cause of pulsatile tinnitus. However, this does not necessarily indicate a stroke warning. It is actually important to reduce risk factors such as exercise and a low-fat diet, as well as keeping blood pressure and blood sugar levels within normal range. Therefore, by leading a healthy lifestyle, you can actually help reduce your risk. If the condition worsens, in addition to the likely already performed ultrasound of the neck blood vessels, more precise diagnostic methods such as CT or MRI scans are available.

Best regards
