fallopian tube

Good day, I am seeking advice regarding the following situation: my girlfriend (27) had one of her fallopian tubes surgically removed due to an ectopic pregnancy. Now, she is experiencing pain on the opposite side and there is significantly more fluid coming out of the drainage tube than the doctors expected. Could this be a sign of a recurring infection and what treatment would you recommend? Antibiotics? Best regards, Robert Pusch
Hello Mr. Pusch!
Thank you for your question.
An ectopic pregnancy is not an inflammation per se. Rather, the rupture of the fallopian tube and the associated heavy bleeding are the problem, which require prompt surgical therapy.
Pain in the abdomen, even on the opposite side, can indeed be attributed to the surgery itself. Typically, a minimally invasive approach is used to access the abdomen from multiple sides. An increased flow from the drainage can have many causes. It is important to consider whether it is more likely to be wound fluid, blood, or inflammatory secretions. Initially, a blood test is advisable. This can provide important clues for or against bleeding or inflammation. An ultrasound examination can further clarify the findings in the abdomen.
For the reasons mentioned above, and without further additional information, I cannot make a recommendation regarding antibiotic therapy.
Your girlfriend should discuss her concerns promptly with the doctors who performed the surgery. Together with them, you can address the issue.
I wish you all the best!
