Ask a doctor on the topic of General medicine

Several weeks of cough

Dear Sir or Madam,

I would like to ask a question regarding the following situation:
About 2 weeks before Christmas, I caught a cold. I had a little cough, but a severe runny nose. After the usual duration, the symptoms improved and I went back to my usual routine. However, after New Year's, a persistent cough appeared, which got worse over time, so I eventually went to see a doctor. I was prescribed an antibiotic, which temporarily improved the situation. However, 2-3 days after the last pill, the cough worsened again, so I visited the doctor once more. My lungs were listened to and a blood test was done to check for elevated inflammation levels. Neither the listening nor the blood test indicated pneumonia.

The doctor then suspected that due to the cold I had before Christmas, mucus is still dripping down my throat, causing the cough. I was prescribed Gelomyrtol Forte as an expectorant, which actually helped with the mucus in my throat. I also regularly do nasal rinses, which do seem to bring some relief to the cough. My condition has not worsened since the last doctor's visit (9 days ago), but it has not significantly improved either. I would say it is slightly better, especially in terms of night rest.

What would you advise me to do now? Should I see the doctor again, or should I continue taking the expectorant and just be patient? Because after more than 3 weeks of these symptoms, I am starting to feel a bit desperate. Thank you!

Good evening, I am happy to help you further.

As you describe it, I would recommend a lung function test to identify asthma caused by an infection and then treat it specifically. It is best to have this done by a pulmonologist.
Of course, you will still need patience, but a cough that has been present for so long should definitely be further investigated, also to rule out anything malignant.
Do you inhale with salt water?
Do you rub yourself with Pulmotin or Wickvaporub?
Moistening the room air is also helpful.

Do you have any questions about this? I am happy to help you further.
All the best and a speedy recovery.

Kind regards,

Dr. K. Hamann
