Pain in legs and burning in feet.

Hello,

for several years now, I have been experiencing steadily increasing pain in my legs every day. The situation is as follows in detail:

Feet:
My feet burn constantly - in addition, they are very cold in winter and very hot in summer. In the summer, I cool them down in the evening with some ice packs so I can sleep - but it only helps moderately. In winter, I usually have an extra blanket just for my feet to make sure they get enough warmth so I can fall asleep. The burning sensation is always there.

Legs:
The pain starts from the knee and feels like body aches when you are sick; only I have them all the time.

Knees:
The knee problems come and go - so they are not always there. My knees can only be bent for a few minutes up to a maximum of 15, then I get additional pain in my knees. It is very difficult when driving a car, often I have to stretch out my right leg, which is more bent due to operating the gas pedal, for a few minutes to make it work again (which makes driving a bit complicated).

The worst part is the burning in the feet accompanied by the leg pain - over time, you just become bad-tempered, sluggish, and don't want to move anymore. I tried to solve the problem on my own with (initially) ibuprofen and later tramadol, which worked somewhat - however, I believe that this cannot and should not be a permanent solution. In your opinion, what is the cause and what can be done about it?

Dr. med. Frauke Gehring

Hello,

Without knowledge about age, gender, lifestyle habits, and underlying conditions, it is difficult to pinpoint a specific cause. However, it seems like there may be a polyneuropathy present (potentially related to diabetes or alcohol), which should be investigated by a neurologist.

B- vitamins are effective in treating this condition, and as for pain relief, Pregabalin is the best solution, with Gabapentin also often being helpful. Tramadol is not as effective, and Ibuprofen is not helpful at all.

Please consult with an internist for further investigation into the underlying causes, and request a referral to a neurologist for nerve testing to confirm the diagnosis.

All the best!

Sincerely, Dr. Höllering
