Inflammation of the bone or the bone membrane after trauma?

About 6 weeks ago, I helped a friend with moving and assembling furniture. During this process, I injured the top of the base joint of my right index finger. I couldn't exactly say how it happened, but I think I hit it against a side wall while assembling a chest of drawers and somehow slipped. Suddenly, I noticed that I was bleeding at that spot.

Over the next three days, I had some pain and always covered the wound with a bandage. The wound is no longer visible, but the pain persisted and even increased, shifting more towards the middle phalanx bone (at the lowest joint of the right index finger on the side).

It's not that I can't bear the pain, but it's uncomfortable and surprising that it has lasted so long. There have been almost pain-free intervals in between. There is only minimal swelling, and the affected area is slightly warm on painful days. It hurts with pressure from the outside, as well as sometimes lightly at rest.

On painful days, I use a pain-relieving ointment. The problem is that I can hardly immobilize the joint or hand, making immobilization very difficult - I have noticed since then in everyday life that this area of the hand is stressed by the most mundane daily movements and tasks. Also professionally.

I have read that bone (periosteum) inflammations from trauma can be prolonged, but I wonder what else I could do and if it is indeed a bone (periosteum) inflammation.

Hello, I would definitely consult a surgeon who will likely take an X-ray. From this, it can be determined whether there is any damage to the bone or if there is an infection under the skin. Is the tetanus protection up to date? Best regards, Dr. Bartels
