Muscle pain AFTER a cold.

Good day,

I am a bit unsure because I had a cold with a runny nose and slightly elevated temperature, and now I seem to have long-lasting effects. The cold started 6 days ago, the runny nose has been gone for 3 days and the body temperature is back to normal. However, since then I have been feeling quite weak and for the past 2 days I have also had body aches, which I did not have before. I do not have any other symptoms. I find this very strange, especially that suddenly afterwards body aches occur.

What do you think this could be and what do you advise me to do?

Dr. med. Frauke Gehring

Good day,

There are several possible explanations. One is that there may indeed be a new flare-up because your immune system was not able to completely overcome the infection. If the viruses start to multiply again, it could get worse. Another possibility is that you have caught a new infection, which is not uncommon during this time. In both cases, cold symptoms may reappear in the next few days.

Or the pain may have other causes (gout, rheumatic disease, etc.). If the pain worsens, I would recommend getting a basic blood test done by your general practitioner.

In the meantime, Ibuprofen or aspirin may be helpful.

Warm regards,
Dr. Höllering
