Hello. I am flying abroad tonight and have obtained Azithromycin 500 mg today (due to suspicion of STDs). I have already taken two doses immediately and will take another dose after 12 hours. Is this enough for the treatment of rectal gonorrhea and chlamydia, or is another medication necessary?
Hello,
Azithromycin is an antibiotic from the macrolide group and can be used for chlamydia infection, gonococcal infection (gonorrhea), as well as infection with Treponema pallidum (syphilis).
It is important to have an examination to confirm these infections.
If there is a gonorrhea infection or a chlamydia infection, the treatment described above is sufficient.
If the suspicion of syphilis is confirmed, treatment should be continued for a longer period and penicillin may need to be taken, as many Treponema strains are already resistant to Azithromycin. Close monitoring of the infection should be carried out in this case.
After completing the treatment, an examination of the antibody titer against Treponema should be done after three months.
It is recommended to continue using condoms during sexual intercourse to prevent transmission.
Do you have any questions about this? I am happy to help you.
Wishing you all the best and a speedy recovery.
