Genital warts appeared for the first time after many years.

A few months ago, I was diagnosed with genital warts. Since I have been in a committed relationship for years, I am now wondering where I got them from.
Realistically, is it possible that I carried the virus for many years (at least 5-6) before it broke out when I was in poor health and the warts appeared?
