What can I do to protect my eyes from computer screens?

Dear Doctor,

my name is Eva Weber and I work several hours a day in front of a computer screen. Lately, I have noticed that my eyes are often tired and irritated, and I also frequently experience blurred vision. I am concerned about my eye health and wonder what I can do to better protect my eyes.

I have already tried taking regular breaks to relax my eyes, and I have also adjusted the brightness and contrast of my screen. However, my condition does not seem to be improving. I am wondering if there are special computer glasses that can alleviate strain on my eyes, or if there are specific exercises or eye drops that could help me.

Are there perhaps certain supplements that are good for the eyes and could improve the health of my eyes? Or should I maybe see an eye doctor for a more thorough examination of my eyes? I am unsure which measures are most effective in protecting my eyes from the strain of computer screens.

I would greatly appreciate your professional assessment and recommendations to improve my eye health and alleviate my symptoms. Thank you in advance for your help.

Sincerely,
Eva Weber

Dear Mrs. Weber,

Thank you for your inquiry regarding your eye health in relation to working in front of a computer screen. It is important to take care of your eye health, especially if you spend several hours in front of a screen every day.

Symptoms of tired, irritated eyes and blurred vision may indicate Computer Vision Syndrome, which is caused by prolonged screen work. It is good that you have already taken some measures to relieve your eyes, such as taking regular breaks and adjusting the screen settings. However, there are still more ways to protect your eyes and alleviate your symptoms.

A special computer screen glasses can actually help relieve your eyes and reduce the strain from the blue light emitted by the screen. These glasses are equipped with special lenses that filter the blue light and can therefore reduce eye fatigue. It may be worth considering getting such glasses.

In addition, there are specific exercises you can do regularly to relax and strengthen your eyes. For example, you can regularly gaze into the distance to loosen your eye muscles, or perform eye exercises such as blinking or focusing on different distances.

The use of eye drops may also be helpful in some cases, especially if your eyes are dry or you suffer from irritated eyes. There are various eye drops on the market that can improve eye moisture and alleviate discomfort. It would be advisable to speak with your ophthalmologist to find the appropriate drops for your specific symptoms.

In addition to these measures, certain supplements can also help improve the health of your eyes. For example, Omega-3 fatty acids, Lutein, and Zeaxanthin are known for their positive effects on eye health. These nutrients can help support vision function and protect the eyes from damage. It may be worth incorporating these nutrients into your diet or taking them as supplements.

Finally, I recommend seeing an eye doctor for a more thorough examination of your eyes. A specialist can make an accurate diagnosis and provide you with personalized recommendations to improve your eye health. It is important to have regular eye exams to detect and treat any problems early on.

I hope this information has been helpful to you and that you can alleviate your eye discomfort. If you have any further questions or need additional support, I am happy to help.

Sincerely,
Ammelie Niemeyer, Ophthalmologist
