Carcinoma treatment with SIRT

An 82-year-old woman is supposed to be treated for a differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) (12 cm in size on the right lobe of the liver) using selective internal radiotherapy (SIRT). According to statements in several internet forums, one should steer clear of this treatment. We are now completely unsure about what to do. We would like to have an independent opinion on what to do. Additionally, we are interested in how often such treatments are carried out in Germany and what the chances of improvement are. We are also interested in any possible alternatives. The latest examination report can be requested upon request.
Hello,
I would like to try to give you a satisfactory answer.
This new and promising procedure often raises hopes of a cure, which unfortunately is not the case. It improves quality of life and extends the remaining lifespan. However, a cure is not to be expected, which leads to many disappointed negative posts on the internet.
But it is a good method that is not as burdensome as surgery or chemotherapy.
I do not know nationwide numbers, but the radiology center at the Klinikum Großhadern in Munich (university hospital) performs about 300 such treatments annually. I assume that other nuclear medicine centers in larger university hospitals have similarly high treatment numbers.
In any case, an improvement in quality of life is possible, especially a reduction in tumor size.
HCC is one of the tumors for which SIRT is suitable. Before deciding on this treatment, make an appointment for a consultation and bring all your documents. The costs should also be discussed. Many centers have special contracts with individual health insurance companies that will then cover the payment. However, please clarify this with your insurance and the treating doctors beforehand.
Alternative therapies such as radiation or chemotherapy are very burdensome and have lower improvement rates. Homeopathy can also help, or herbal treatments with milk thistle preparations. But even with these, a cure cannot be expected.
A healthy diet (rich in vitamins with lots of fruits and fresh vegetables) and drinking plenty of water (about 200ml= 1 glass per hour) supports and strengthens your immune system and defenses.
All the best, and if you have any questions, I am happy to continue answering them.
