Ask a doctor on the topic of Neurology

Regarding taking cymbals and unclear symptoms on the body.

Currently taking the medication Cymbalta 60 mg for nerve pain, muscle twitches, and cramps. Unfortunately, this medication is not working properly anymore and seems to be causing the opposite effect - I have had a constant twitching in my right arm for the past 2 weeks that almost doesn't stop, along with tingling sensations, calf twitches, and pounding in multiple areas of my body. I have already been checked by a neurologist, had my cerebrospinal fluid examined, and nothing significant was found except for a slight increase in protein levels. My regular doctor is also at a loss. I need advice on what to do next - should I stop taking the medication? Could these be possible side effects? If so, how should I go about discontinuing the medication?

Dr. med. Frauke Gehring

Good day,

Cramps, tremors, and nerve discomfort are indeed common side effects of Cymbalta.

That's why I would recommend tapering off it. Firstly, reduce the dosage to 30 mg for one to two weeks, and then discontinue.

Alternatively, Lyrica could be an option.

Sincerely, Dr. Höllering
