Eye twitching when in contact with water

Whenever I wash my eyes with water, I immediately experience involuntary eye fluttering or twitching several times in a row, either immediately afterwards or when drying them. Then it goes away again. A few weeks ago, I had twitching in my left upper eyelid, but this completely went away after taking magnesium. Except for the morning and evening twitching during washing, that has remained. What could be the cause of this?

Dr. med. Frauke Gehring

Good evening,

Eye twitching is often a sign of tiredness or overwork. Magnesium can help alleviate it to the point where it no longer occurs spontaneously, but water is a strong irritant, as is rubbing.

I would take this as an opportunity to have your vision tested and make sure to take regular breaks in your everyday life.

However, it is not a sign of a serious illness.

Wishing you all the best!

Warm regards, Dr. Höllering
