Muscle twitching in MS

Dear Sir or Madam,

I recently wrote to you. I had muscle twitches in my legs, stomach, and arms. Since I am a patient with MS, I consulted my neurologist. He prescribed me 3 days of cortisone. The twitching was gone. However, on the 4th day when the cortisone wore off, the twitching immediately returned everywhere, mainly when lying down or sitting. The twitching does not involve any movement, only a visible twitch on the skin. I am afraid of ALS because, of course, Google shows ALS when searching for muscle twitches. What do you think? Does it indicate something good that the cortisone initially helped?

Dr. med. Frauke Gehring

Good day,

If you had ALS, the twitching would not have temporarily disappeared due to cortisone. Muscle twitching is a symptom of ALS, but it usually occurs later than other typical ALS symptoms and is also more often observed in multiple sclerosis.

So you don't have to fear that you are now also suffering from the extremely rare disease ALS. On the internet, ALS is constantly discussed in relation to muscle twitching, which can occur simply due to inner restlessness. This gives the disease much more attention than is sensible, as it is almost never the cause of muscle twitching.

All the best!

Sincerely, Dr. Höllering
