Ask a doctor on the topic of Internal medicine

Liver values significantly elevated due to alcohol.

For several years I have been drinking alcohol daily. About 0.3 liters per day. My liver values are very high, GGT at around 250. Since I cannot immediately stop completely, I would like to only drink on 2-3 days a week from now on. My theoretical question is whether this can lower my liver values, or if they will only rise more slowly or stay the same. Is it possible to support my liver values with medication?

Dr. med. Frauke Gehring

Good day,

If you are unable to stop, it could be a sign of addiction, so medical supervision would be advisable. Unfortunately, you did not mention what exactly you are drinking.

It is possible to temporarily lower liver values by reducing alcohol consumption. However, each dose of alcohol damages more of the still healthy cells, so there are fewer that can do their job. Eventually, you reach a point where liver values rise again because the last remaining cells are overwhelmed, leading to cirrhosis.

Milk thistle supplements can help the liver, but they are not able to offset such a toxic burden in any way.

Sincerely, Dr. Gehring
