Ask a doctor on the topic of Internal medicine

intestinal disease

Hello,
I am very uncomfortable asking this question, but 4 years ago my husband and I accidentally confused Voltaren with lubricant during anal/sexual intercourse. Since then, I have been suffering from rectal bleeding, initially only in the rectum but now in multiple areas. My question is, is it possible that the Voltaren gel has triggered this? Ultimately, Crohn's disease was diagnosed, but due to the lack of chronic signs, the inflammation cannot be attributed to any specific cause. Since the bleeding has not stopped (despite budenofalk), I have started infliximab treatment. I would greatly appreciate a clear answer. I have not told any doctor about this, as I am simply too embarrassed.

Dr. med. Frauke Gehring

Good day,

Voltaren can trigger inflammation and bleeding, but not over such a long period of time. Therefore, this mix-up is no longer significant. It is also likely that a sample was taken in which typical cells for Crohn's disease were found. Although bleeding would be more typical for ulcerative colitis.

But the main thing is: the minor accident 4 years ago has nothing to do with it.

I wish you all the best!

Sincerely, Dr. Gehring
