Increased temperature after pulling the back

My son-in-law strained his back yesterday while waterskiing on vacation due to a sudden start. That's why I asked here yesterday. The doctor reassured me and said that such a strain will go away after a few days. My concern was a herniated disc.

Now my son-in-law has a slight fever today. 38 degrees. Otherwise, he doesn't feel particularly well. He also has mild stomach pain. By the way, he is in Mauritius. Could the fever be related to the back pain, or could it be another problem?

Could something be injured in the abdominal area?

Thank you very much.

Dr. med. Frauke Gehring

Hello,

First of all, I agree with my colleague: a herniated disc does not occur from a simple "strain" and is characterized (when dangerous) by paralysis and/or numbness.

Temperature and discomfort are certainly not related to the back. It is possible that he has a gastrointestinal infection, which is not uncommon in Mauritius, or a viral infection. If he has been water skiing for a long time or in the sun, a mild heatstroke may also be a possibility.

Therefore, he should stay in a cool, shaded area, eat cautiously (tea, white bread), and drink plenty of fluids. If he is lucky, everything will be forgotten in two days.

I wish him luck!

Warm regards,
