CRP value after gastrointestinal infection

Good day,

last Tuesday I suddenly got a "stomach flu" or infection with very severe diarrhea, body aches, and strong nausea without fever. The diarrhea remained very severe for about 2 days (about 40-50 times a day) and towards the end, it was also bloody (I am also suffering from a resolving perianal thrombosis at the same time) as my anus was very irritated.

On Thursday (19.09. around 12 o'clock), a blood test was done, at that time the symptoms were still very severe. The blood test was okay, only the CRP level was elevated at 32.1. I was prescribed antibiotics. From Thursday night/Friday morning, the symptoms improved significantly.

Since last night (20.09) I have been feeling absolutely fine, have no complaints, no vomiting, no diarrhea, and no pain. I can also eat normal food and drink fluids. The abdomen is absolutely soft and normal (palpation by doctor). However, today's blood test (21.09. around 11:00) showed a CRP of 88.1 (all other values were within normal range). The CRP value is now worrying me... Therefore, I have the following questions:

- Is this possible after a severe gastroenteritis infection?
- If so, is it normal for the value to have increased so much (unfortunately, no blood test was done on 20.09, so this value is unknown)?
- Does this value (despite feeling completely well) require immediate hospitalization or is careful monitoring by a general practitioner sufficient?

Thank you in advance!

Gender: Male
Age: 28

Medication: Antibiotics (3x daily 400mg Metronidazole HEXAL), since 19.09.

Hello,

I am happy to help you further.

It is very good that your symptoms have improved so significantly and quickly with the antibiotic therapy.

I consider the fact that the CRP value is still elevated to be quite appropriate, but not concerning. Your symptoms are almost gone and only the inflammation marker is still elevated. This often lags behind and will normalize significantly in the coming days.
A check-up with your primary care physician on Monday or Tuesday would be absolutely sufficient.

Therefore, I want to reassure you and wish you a nice weekend.

Do you have any questions? I am happy to help you further.

Best regards,
Dr. K. Hamann
