Vaginal yeast infection during pregnancy

Hello!

I have known for 8 days that an IVF treatment was successful and I am finally pregnant. About 4 days ago, a vaginal yeast infection appeared at the entrance of the vagina. I called the fertility clinic; the medical assistant advised me to get Canesten Gyn over the counter at the pharmacy. However, internet research revealed that the active ingredient Clotrimazole, which is contained in Canesten Gyn, should not be used in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy (increased risk of miscarriage). The package insert also warns against it. I called the fertility clinic again, the medical assistant responded somewhat annoyed and stuck to her recommendation. What is the right thing to do? I have now tried to address the problem with garlic and natural yogurt - without success. I hope you can provide me with more clarity.

Best regards,

Viktoria (29 years old)

Good day,
a fungal infection is a common condition in early pregnancy. It is true that Clotrimazole is not the first choice medication in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. The fungus itself does not harm the pregnancy, as it does not ascend into the uterus. It should only be treated before birth to prevent transmission to the baby through the birth canal.

Treatment can be done with the active ingredient Biofanal if symptoms such as itching or burning are present, which most people can manage well in the first 12 weeks. If only increased discharge is present, then lactic acid preparations can also help. If symptoms persist, then treatment with Clotrimazole or Myfungar can be considered.

Garlic and natural yogurt do not harm, but are not always effective.
