Hypothyroidism

Hello,

I have been diagnosed with a mild underactive thyroid. Values: TSH 5.14 mU/l, fT3 2.8 ng/l, and fT4 10.2 ng/l. I have informed my general practitioner and gynecologist about my desire to have a child. However, both of them do not see the need for treatment with thyroid hormones. I had a miscarriage in August 2010 and have been trying to conceive for a total of 2 years. I suspect that it may not be working properly now due to this underactivity. What do you think? Thank you for your response.

Good evening,
indeed, a TSH value of 1.5 should be aimed for in order to have an optimal setting for pregnancy. Especially after the miscarriage you have experienced, your thyroid should be well adjusted. Since your gynecologist is not willing to treat you according to fertility guidelines, you should see an endocrinologist. Or go to a specialized fertility center if one is available nearby. Since you have been unsuccessfully "trying" for 2 years, the examinations and therapy are covered by insurance, as long as you are under 40.

In addition to taking L-Thyrox, taking selenium is recommended.

All the best and good luck!
