Embolization of an AV fistula

Dear Sir or Madam,

First of all, I would like to apologize if my question is not in the correct category.

After a conducted angiography to visualize a suspected AV fistula, this fistula is now to be closed by embolization. Before the discussion with the doctor, I would like to have some information from you as experts.

1. How does embolization work? Since I am absolutely not a fan of general anesthesia, I hope that it is not necessarily required?

2. How long should one generally be prepared to be a hospital guest?

3. Can it be said with a clear conscience after the treatment that the fistula issue is finally resolved?

Thank you for the information in advance!

Hello,

I am happy to help you further.

Where is the AV fistula located - how large are the affected vessels?

In most cases, this catheter-based treatment is performed without anesthesia (possibly with local anesthesia).
To monitor and assess the success, most patients stay 2-3 days after the short procedure.
After successful embolization, this area is very likely to be permanently treated.

Do you have any questions about this? I am happy to help you further.

Best regards,

Dr. K. Hamann
