Consequences of thrombosis Phlebology

Hello,

I was diagnosed with a deep vein thrombosis (right leg) in August 2019. I was prescribed blood thinning tablets (Eliquis) and thrombosis stockings. I was supposed to take the tablets and wear the stockings for 6 months, so the therapy ends at the end of January/ beginning of February. Subjectively, I would say that I feel good. I can do sports and go for a run without my right calf cramping too much. I have also made an appointment with a phlebologist in February for further evaluation.

However, I am very worried about the long-term effects of the thrombosis on my future quality of life and my career. Currently, I am training to become a customs officer and would like to work in the enforcement and firearms-carrying sector.
What are the possible consequences of the thrombosis?
What is the likelihood of developing post-thrombotic syndrome?
How could the consequences affect my career?

Am I overthinking this?

About me:
I am 24 years old,
always been very active in sports
long-time smoker (I quit smoking since the diagnosis of thrombosis)

I would appreciate any help.

Best regards.

MD Felix Aaslepp

Hello,

According to your description, you are doing everything right. You have taken Eliquis, worn compression stockings, and even quit smoking. These are the best conditions for the thrombosis to heal without consequences and perhaps it is already healed. The phlebologist will be able to provide more information on this soon. Continue to abstain from smoking, ideally for good, and considering your age, I believe that the thrombosis will heal without any lasting effects.

Therefore, please do not worry about your future. You have done everything to help your body recover and remain healthy in the long term. I wish you all the best!
