Hello,
The D-dimer value was 200 on the third day after the positive COVID-19 diagnosis. It was only on the 12th day that the D-dimer value increased to 1 and the patient feels stabbing pains in various parts of the body.
Can the D-dimer value increase even more after the 12th day?
Which medications and measures are recommended?
Symptoms: Irritating cough and pneumonia (30%). Since the 12th day.
Azithro did not help. Currently using levofloxacin, which has partially helped.
The patient is abroad.
Good day,
The D-dimer value is not much more than a screening value. It increases when excessive fibrin degradation products are produced, leading to excessive coagulation. It is worth noting that there are also people who always have a D-dimer value over 1000 without any identifiable cause.
However, the value is not suitable as a parameter for monitoring an infection, as it is highly susceptible to fluctuations. Therefore, it can still increase even after the 12th day. I would only recommend determining it if there are indications of a thromboembolic complication, such as acute shortness of breath or a swollen leg.
Antibiotics like Azithromycin or Levofloxacin cannot help with Covid19, as it is a viral disease. Antibiotics only work against bacteria.
The patient should be given cortisone bronchial spray and anticoagulant medication.
I wish her all the best!
Warm regards,
Dr. Gehring
