Dear Dr. Höllering,
For the third and hopefully final time, I am requesting information regarding the Chinese plastic shoes that I have been wearing at home for about 8 years.
You wrote to me that the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons present in these shoes can also be absorbed through the skin, but the risk in my case is negligible (which I gratefully accepted and slept well).
Before I get to the question, here is a fact that I did not mention: I have had a problem with calluses on both heels for several years. Despite intensive care with various creams prescribed by the dermatologist, the callus formation has been so strong several times a year that the skin cracked, often as a proper bleeding wound that took many days to heal.
Now the question: I (still quite relaxed) read the information about PAH on "allum.de." It is stated there, among other things, that the possible carcinogenic effect of PAH probably largely depends on the site of absorption (the lungs in case of inhalation, the skin in case of dermal absorption, the stomach/intestines in case of oral absorption).
If this is the case, then in my worst case scenario, the potential damage would be limited to the feet - or so I thought at first.
But what about in my case, since the heels were so often bleeding?
Did carcinogenic PAH have an especially easy time penetrating through the open wounds on the heel and spreading throughout the body beyond the site of absorption for years?
Best regards,
Roland
