enlarged lymph nodes
Good morning Dr. ...,
Can and should I insist on surgery to remove an enlarged lymph node?
I am female, 51 years old and not genetically predisposed to LK-related issues.
Last year during an ultrasound, an enlarged lymph node (right armpit) was discovered. I had no inflammation or pain, and I was not ill before. (Lymphadenopathy and lymphadenitis were ruled out) My weight remained constant.
Within a few weeks, it grew from 1.8 to 3.5 cm. My hematologist referred me to the clinic for the removal of this LK.
The surgery took place on November 27, 2013.
On the attached histopathology report, you can see that a total of 3 LK were removed. During the surgery, lymphatic vessels were severed, leading to complete numbness from the upper arm to under the armpit, all the way to the nipple. This became infected and was successfully treated with intravenous antibiotics during another hospital stay. The redness disappeared, and the affected areas cooled down through cooling. A breast biopsy was done - unremarkable. However, lymphedema remained around the nipple and areola, now being treated with constant lymphatic drainage.
I was explained that I have a tendency for my LK to swell and if not removed, they can progress to malignant lymphomas. Therefore, I should go for regular ultrasound check-ups.
These ultrasounds take place once a quarter.
In mid-April 2014, my hematologist found another enlarged LK on my neck - right next to the main artery. This one measured 1.8 cm. I have an appointment scheduled for June 23, 2014, for the next check-up.
Yesterday I had an appointment at the breast clinic (referral from my gynecologist), where my breast was ultrasounded again. Result: breast is all clear.
The LK in the neck area has now grown to 2.0 cm.
Question:
Do I have so-called patient rights?
Can I insist on the removal of enlarged LK?
I am, of course, afraid that if these LK are not removed, they could become malignant, as indicated in the histopathology report and explained to me during the follow-up examination at the clinic.
I know it may not be necessary...BUT what if it is?
I believe that every person is responsible for their own health, or what is your opinion?
Thank you in advance
Kind regards
Anxious Sparrow
