Ask a doctor on the topic of Occupational medicine

Which first aid measures should I know at the workplace?

Dear Doctor,

My name is Katja Hagedorn and I work in an office where we spend many hours a day sitting at the computer. Lately, I have been experiencing frequent headaches and tension in my neck and shoulder area. I am concerned that this may be caused by my work and I am wondering what first aid measures I should be aware of at the workplace to alleviate or prevent such symptoms.

I have already tried to improve my workstation ergonomics and take regular breaks, but the symptoms still persist. I would like to know if there are specific exercises or measures that I can perform directly at the workplace to alleviate my symptoms.

Additionally, I am wondering if there may also be psychological causes for my symptoms, as stress at the workplace has increased recently. Are there also first aid measures that could help me manage stress and relax?

I would greatly appreciate your support and advice in helping me manage my symptoms and improve my health at the workplace.

Thank you in advance.

Sincerely,
Katja Hagedorn

Dear Mrs. Hagedorn,

Thank you for your message and your trust in my expertise as an occupational physician. I am sorry to hear that you are suffering from headaches and tension in the neck and shoulder area. These complaints are common consequences of long hours at the computer and can be caused by poor ergonomics, lack of movement, and workplace stress.

It is good that you have already taken measures to improve your workplace ergonomics and take regular breaks. However, it may be helpful to perform specific exercises directly at your workplace to alleviate your symptoms. Here are some simple exercises that you can integrate into your workday:

1. Neck rotation: Slowly turn your head to the left and right to release tension in the neck area.
2. Shoulder circles: Move your shoulders slowly in a circle to release tension in the shoulders.
3. Back stretch: Lean back and stretch your arms over your head to relax your back.
4. Eye exercises: Take regular breaks to relieve your eyes by looking into the distance or blinking.

It is also important to pay attention to your posture and to regularly stand up to stretch and move. In addition, relaxation techniques such as breathing exercises, meditation, or progressive muscle relaxation can help reduce stress and improve your mental health.

Regarding the psychological causes of your symptoms, it is possible that increasing workplace stress plays a role. It is important to take care of your mental health and seek professional support if needed. First aid measures may include taking regular breaks, getting sufficient rest, and talking to colleagues or supervisors about your concerns.

I recommend talking to your supervisor about your symptoms and considering an occupational health examination to find individual solutions for your situation. Do not hesitate to contact me with any further questions or concerns.

I wish you all the best and a speedy recovery.

Best regards,
Ludwig Born
