Tapering off Sertraline (antidepressant)

Dear Sir or Madam,

For a few years now, I have been taking Sertraline-Teva. My morning daily dose is 150 mg. In consultation with my neurologist, I would like to taper off this medication safely. According to my neurologist:

- 4 weeks of Sertraline 100 mg
- 4 weeks of Sertraline 50 mg
- 4 weeks of Sertraline 50 mg every other day, then discontinue

This seems too short to me, so my question to you is:
In what timeframe and with what dosage can I taper off this medication? According to my information, I need to take the medication every day even during the tapering off period. Due to my poor physical condition, I am concerned about this.
Thank you in advance!

Hello,

the tapering off of sertraline should be done slowly, which also requires regular intake, but gradually decreasing the dose. The recommended reduction over 3x4 weeks is acceptable to "quickly" get off sertraline, but one can also individually extend the tapering off process. For example, 8 weeks of 100mg, followed by 8 weeks of 50mg, and another 8 weeks of 50mg every 2 days, which is possible without taking this tablet daily.

So, the minimum reduction is over 3x4 weeks, but it can also be done slower (in the example, 3x8 weeks).

All the best and a speedy recovery to you.

Best regards,
Dr. K. Hamann
