Muscle twitching

Dear Sir or Madam,
For about 6 weeks, I have been experiencing frequent muscle twitches. It started in my calves, but later spread to the rest of my body (thighs, upper arms, forearms, abdomen, back, hands, face). I notice it mostly at rest. I am very afraid of ALS.

Dr. med. Frauke Gehring

Good day,

Not only is ALS a very rare disease, but also the fact that paralysis occurs before the described muscle twitches should already reassure you. Clumsiness, stumbling, finger disobedience, or (rarely) speech disturbances are early signs. In general, small, localized paralysis occurs before the cramps.
Muscle twitches are common in many healthy people, especially in heat, because magnesium is lost. If you are also nervous, the twitches can last longer.
If you are young, ALS is even more unlikely, as it is a disease of middle age.
If you are feeling scared, please consult your primary care physician first. However, you do not need to be afraid.

Sincerely, Dr. Höllering
