night sweats

Hello, I had bronchitis 10 days ago. I was prescribed antibiotics for 10 days. Everything seemed to improve. For the past 3 days, I have been waking up at night drenched in sweat. My throat is occasionally scratchy and I have constant yellow/greenish phlegm.

Previous examinations:

May 2015 - Colonoscopy (small polyp removed)
May 2015 - MRI of head, back, cervical spine (no findings)
September 2015 - Endoscopy (diagnosed with reflux and stomach inflammation, prescribed pantoprazole for 6 weeks)
September 2015 - Chest X-ray (no findings)

I have also been to an ENT specialist.

What could be causing the night sweats?

Could it be from the antibiotics?

Or is it something serious?

I do not have a fever. I measured 36.6°C in my ear.

Good day,

There is nothing "bad" speaking here. Unfortunately, you did not mention whether your sinuses were examined by an ENT doctor. They could be irritated. A chronic inflammation would explain the night sweats, sore throat, and phlegm. If this persists, I would recommend getting an ultrasound of the sinuses.

At this point, a blood test could be done to see if there is still a bacterial infection present. If you still have a cough, and it is not significantly improved in three weeks, a chest X-ray may be necessary. In cases of persistent cough, tuberculosis would need to be ruled out after six weeks, but there is no need to fear anything worse.

Get well soon!

Sincerely, Dr. Höllering
