Ask a doctor on the topic of Internal medicine

Left vein on the head swollen in the temple area.

Hello Dr. Höllering,

I know that it is mainly about my anxiety disorder. But I have another question. I have noticed that the vein on the left side of my head (at the temple) is very thick, while on the other side this is not the case. Should I have this checked or is this normal?? I'm worried that this vein may be inflamed or something. Thank you in advance for your response.

Good day,

A thickened temporal vein in itself is not a reason to see a doctor. Sometimes veins are quite visible when they are strong. Since they rest on the temporal bone, they cannot disappear into depth.

A cause for concern would be a thickened, inflamed temporal artery that causes excruciating headaches. In this case, temporal arteritis must be feared, which requires immediate treatment. But then you feel so ill that you have no doubt that you need a doctor!

Sincerely, Dr. Höllering
