Inflammation of the diverticula

My family doctor diagnosed me with diverticulitis today. This was done through physical examination and blood and urine tests. On Saturday and Sunday, I had excruciating pain along with a bloated stomach. By Monday, the pain and fever had subsided, but the physical examination is still painful. The doctor only prescribed antibiotics - no further tests, such as ultrasound or CT scan, were ordered.
A nurse I know with relevant experience suggested that I insist on a CT scan of the abdomen, as a hidden perforation may not be detected otherwise.
My family doctor does not see the need for this and will not provide a referral.
How should I proceed?
Good evening,
The diagnosis can be made very reliably through a blood test and a physical examination, and the fact that you are feeling better after the antibiotics proves the accuracy of the diagnosis. Further tests are really not necessary.
A CT scan is absolutely unnecessary in this case; it brings a strong radiation exposure and is only indicated if increasing temperature or severe pain make a covered perforation possible.
Your acquaintance probably has no idea how common diverticulitis is! If a CT scan were done every time, it would not be sensible in terms of cost or radiation exposure.
Please trust your primary care physician.
Sincerely, Dr. Höllering
