Ask a doctor on the topic of Internal medicine

great concern

Good evening!

I just came from the emergency room of a hospital (I had an accident during a work assignment by jumping from a gazebo roof - but only sprained my ankle). The emergency room was quite busy - many patients with partially heavily bleeding wounds. Somehow the topic of HIV came to my mind, and I started to get scared, as I have quite battered hands from the work assignment with some small half-open cuts. One does touch things here and there. For example, I had to spend quite a while lying on a stretcher. The nurses handed me a pull rope with a handle (in case I needed to call someone). I didn't really look at the thing, whether it was clean or not, but later I thought: what if someone with HIV had it in their hand before? I'm sure I have come into contact with other objects as well. This may sound strange - but at the moment I am really worried. I would like to ask the experts for their opinion on whether my concern is justified or not.

I can reassure you, you don't need to worry. You can't get infected this way.

The explanations on the website are very good and understandable:

http://www.gib-aids-keine-chance.de/wissen/aids_hiv/wie_hiv_nicht_uebertragen_wird.php

They explicitly describe other similar situations, which will give you additional reassurance.

You definitely have not been infected.
