How can I best protect my skin from harmful UV radiation?

Dear Dermatologist,

my name is Hildegard Pilz and I am 45 years old. In recent years, I have noticed that my skin reacts more sensitively to sunlight and I often get sunburned. I have heard that UV radiation can be harmful to the skin and I would like to know how I can best protect my skin from these harmful influences.

My skin is rather dry and tends to burn quickly. I work outdoors a lot and therefore spend a lot of time in the sun. I am concerned about the long-term effects of too much sun exposure, such as premature skin aging, pigmentation spots, or in the worst case skin cancer.

I have tried some sunscreens, but I am unsure which product is best suited for my skin and how often I should apply it. I also wonder if there are other measures I can take to protect my skin from UV radiation. Are there specific clothing or accessories that I should wear? Or other behaviors that I should consider to keep my skin healthy?

I would appreciate it if you could give me some tips and advice on how to best protect my skin from harmful UV radiation. Thank you in advance for your help.

Sincerely,
Hildegard Pilz

Dear Mrs. Pilz,

Thank you very much for your inquiry regarding the protection of your skin from harmful UV radiation. It is very important to protect yourself from the negative effects of the sun, especially if you have noticed that your skin reacts more sensitively and you often get sunburned.

Since you work outdoors a lot professionally and therefore spend a lot of time in the sun, it is particularly important to take appropriate measures to protect your skin. First and foremost, it is important to use a good sunscreen. For dry skin, I recommend choosing a product with a high sun protection factor (SPF) that also provides moisture. Make sure the sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Apply the sunscreen generously and reapply every two hours, especially after sweating or swimming.

In addition to sunscreen, there are other measures you can take to protect your skin from harmful UV radiation. It is best to wear protective clothing, such as long-sleeved tops, long pants, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses with UV protection. Avoid being in the sun during midday, when UV radiation is strongest. Instead, seek shade or wear a visor cap.

Furthermore, it is important to regularly check your skin for changes such as new moles, pigmented spots, or other abnormalities. If you have concerns, it is best to have your skin examined by a dermatologist. Regular skin checks can help detect and treat skin cancer early.

I hope these tips help you protect your skin from harmful UV radiation. If you have any further questions or would like individual advice, I am happy to assist you.

Best regards,
