Anesthesia heart

Good day,

I have had a noise in my heart since birth, which was observed until the age of 6. After that, it was called a "cosmetic flaw". Now I am 49 and underwent surgery a few months ago. Before the surgery (in the hospital), they only listened to my heart. My GP did an ECG and said the electricity flows differently but it's not a problem... My surgery lasted 3.5 hours. If there had been something wrong with my heart, would I have been informed or would I have had to ask?

Kind regards,
S.K.

Dear Inquirer,

Due to the very vague information provided, I cannot tell you exactly what is causing the heart sound you heard, but audible heart sounds are usually caused by changes in the heart valves or by atrial septal or ventricular septal defects. These can be easily identified and determined through a so-called echocardiography (= ultrasound examination of the heart). This is a straightforward and risk-free as well as painless examination, which is carried out by cardiologists and specially trained internists. It would be best for you to get a referral from your family doctor, so you can quickly get clarity. Since you apparently do not feel any symptoms at 49 years old and also recently recovered well from the quite long surgery, it is possible that you only have a minor problem, as you already stated, but as I said before, I cannot give you a precise answer here. Best regards, O. Stephan.
