Student with two jobs - maximum earnings in a year?
August 21, 2012 | 30,00 EUR | answered by Dr. Yanqiong Bolik
Hello,
shortly about my case:
I am a medical student, single, and currently in my practical year. As part of this training, I am compensated with approximately 200 € gross per month. This has been classified under tax class 6 since March 2012.
For 1 1/2 years, I have had a side job where I earn varying amounts each month (around 300 - 1200 € gross per month). This is classified under tax class 1 for me.
It is not possible to have the job classified as a 400 € job or something similar under tax class 6.
My questions:
How much can I earn maximum in the calendar year 2012 without having to worry about major deductions? Is there a fixed limit or do I need to consider other factors? Should I make an income tax declaration due to tax class 6? Despite my research, I am still looking for reliable information.
Thank you!
Dear questioner,
Thank you for your inquiry, which I will gladly answer taking into account your effort and the rules of this platform.
Please note that my explanation is based on the facts presented, and that adding, omitting, changing the information, or the ambiguity of the information can change the tax outcome.
How much can I earn maximum in the calendar year 2012 without having to fear larger deductions?
- In tax class 6, income tax is already due from 1 EUR. There is generally no earnings limit. "Larger deductions" is a subjective term. If you can specify to what extent a tax deduction is considered large, I can calculate the gross monthly income for you accordingly.
Is there a fixed limit or do I need to consider other factors?
- There is no fixed limit. Even remuneration in tax class 6 is subject to social security contributions.
Should I file an income tax return due to tax class 6?
- Yes, because according to § 46 para. 2 no. 2 EStG, an assessment must be carried out if the taxpayer has received wages from several employers at the same time. This applies except in cases where wages from multiple employers have been aggregated for wage tax deduction purposes according to § 38 para. 3a sentence 7. Based on your description of the situation, the exception does not apply.
Income tax is an advance payment of the income tax to be paid. From experience, this advance payment (especially in tax class 6) will be higher than the actual tax liability. Therefore, it is advisable in most cases to file a tax return.
I hope I was able to assist you.
